Introduction
------------

Torrentcheck is a small utility to check a downloaded torrent against its original .torrent file and report any problems to a report file.

The program currently checks if files are present, they are the correct size, pass SHA-1 hash checks and if there are any unneeded files and folders in the torrent's folder.

Usage
-----

Simply drag the .torrent file to the box on the top of the status section and the directory of the downloaded torrent to the bottom box and click on 'Check Torrent'. Alternatively select the torrent file and directory from the 'File' menu.

There are several settings you can change:

'Log found files': When this option is set TorrentCheck will log found files in the report file. Turned off by default as the log file can get really big if there are thousands of files in the torrent.

'File integrity check (SHA-1)': TorrentCheck will check the file integrity of every file using the hash information from the .torrent file. This can take a long time on large torrents.

'Keep TorrentCheck windows on top': When this option is set the TorrentCheck window will always be on top of other windows.

'Attempt to fix/rebuild missing files': Will attempt to find missing files. This feature is not accurate, hence the word 'attempt'. However, it is useful for updating a torrent when file names change. It will find the renamed files and rename them to the correct name. You can also use the backup folder as a source to rebuild a torrent, if the backup folder is used matching files are copied to the torrent's folder. The reason this feature is not accurate is because the only information in a torrent file is file sizes - if two or more files in the torrent are exactly the same size, they could get mixed up. Your torrent client will re-download any incorrect files anyway so this will not be an issue if you are joining the torrent. This feature is just to join an updated torrent at a higher percentage and the chance of files being the exact same size is low. Just be aware that it is not smart, if it finds a file that is the correct size it will use it as the missing file. It will first scan the torrent folder and then the backup/rebuild location if it is set.

'Open report after scan': Opens the report file with the default text viewer after the scan is complete.

'Check for unneeded': Disabling this option stops TorrentCheck from checking for unneeded files and folders.

'Delete unneeded files': With this option set, TorrentCheck deletes any unneeded files and folders. Use with caution!

'Delete unneeded only when torrent is complete': With this option set, the program will only start deleting files if the torrent is reported as complete. This prevents the program from deleting a wrongly-selected directory.

'Select files to ignore': Pressing this button will open up a window which allows you to select files and folders to ignore when scanning for unneeded files. This is especially useful if you download two or more torrents to the same directory and you don't want TorrentCheck to delete the selected files.

'Trim padded files': Some torrent clients create files that have been padded with garbage, with this option set TorrentCheck will trim the files to the correct size.

'Delete wrong sized files': Delete wrong sized files will delete any files which have the correct file name but are the wrong size. Can be used instead of 'Trim padded files', but not together with. If you have backups turned on, you can use the contents of the backup folder as a sort of rollback when updating a torrent.

'Create backups': You should leave this option set, then you can inspect the backup location yourself to check if you want to keep any unneeded files.

'Backup/rebuild source location': You can select any location to store the backups. If you put the backup on a different drive to where your torrents are, it will take longer to backup because they first need to be copied to the drive. Use the same drive and the backup will be nearly instant. Can also be used as a source to rebuild missing files if the option 'Attempt to fix/rebuild missing' is set. Files will only be copied from the backup location.

'Backup to Torrent's Directory': When this option is set, the backup folder will created in the torrent's original directory.

'Torrent Viewer': Clicking on the torrent viewer will bring up a window with a tree view of the currently selected .torrent file. From here you can inspect the torrent and save a text file listing of the torrent. You can any number of torrent viewer windows by leaving the current window open and selecting another .torrent file to view.

Requirements
------------

TorrentCheck requires trrntzip.exe/trrntzip to use the 'Torrent Zip' functions. Under Linux, xdg-utils needs to be installed otherwise 'Open report after scan' will not work. I think most distributions have it installed by default.
